Derek is a musician who grew up in the West Island of Montreal. As a child, he first started out singing but then got a few drum lessons for his 10th birthday and he hasn’t stopped playing drums since. He grew up playing in churches and loved the grooves he found playing gospel music. Though he loved playing, he never found his niche until going to school at Dawson College where his eyes were open and inspired by all the people coming from all different walks of life.

 

 Although the lessons didn’t last very long, Derek continued to be self-taught by watching a variety of different drummers, some of his favorites being Carter Beauford, Dave Grohl, Chad Smith and Questlove. As a drummer with over 20 years of experience, Derek has also been giving drum lessons for beginners to intermediates in schools, with private lessons, and to people with special needs.

Derek has had the pleasure of drumming with a variety of bands, musicians and solo artists over his music career. Derek started playing guitar and performing solo in 2010 and is the lead singer for the Montreal based rock band “East of Sunday” that started in 2013.

Derek keeps the beat and brings the groove, while also providing some texture with his backing vocals.
